In a bold move that has ignited fierce debate across College Football Auburn University announced on August 19,2025 claiming seven additional national championships for their storied football program. The Tigers are long recognized for titles in 1957 and 2010 now assert dominance in 1910,1913,1914,1958,1983,1993,and 2004 bringing them total to nine. Athletic Director John Cogen cited overlooked achievements as justification from a 2014 book title”Auburn Unclaimed National Championship” that argued for these very seasons. “ For too long,Auburn has allowed others to tell our story” Cohen said in a statement.”These teams exemplified excellence and deserve recognition based on credible historical evaluation.”

Auburn Fans celebrated on Social Media, with one X post declaring," War Eagle! Time to update the banners at Jordan Hare.” Rivals, however, mocked the claims. Alabama supporters called it “pathices,” while LSU declared the 1958 grab as "revisions history,” pointing out their Tigers 11-0 seasons and Sugar Bowl rout of Clemson. USC alumni similarity bristled at 2004 claim, initiating their vacant title(due to NCAA sanctions) still in Los Angeles. ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum labeled it “ludicrous” question where such retroactive claims end.

Crutches argue the move reeks of desperation ahead of a rebuilding 2025 season under coach Hugh Freeze, but proponents like former coach Terry Bowden who lead the 1993 team welcomed it. “This recognizes the hard work of these players”, Bowden said. The NCAA’s official record book allows for such sector based claims,as no single entity crowned champions before 1936.
