This marked Miami’s first ever win in the Fiesta Bowl(0-4) and earned them their first national championship appearance since 2001. For Ole Miss it was a heartbreaking end to their best season in t program history snapping their seven game winning streak and eighth game run of scoring 30 points.
Miami,the lowest seeded team ever to reach the CFP title game. They overcame a fourth quarter deficit thanks to Carson Beck who scored a game winning 3yard touchdown run with 18 sec left in the fourth quarter. The Hurricanes defense ranked fourth in the nation in scoring defense and 10th in total defense; they hold Ole Miss under 400 yards. Ole Miss offense second in the nation at 496 yards per game and 37.6 points kept in with big plays and fields goals but couldn't stop the Hurricanes.
In the first quarter Miami kick 38 yard field goal. Miami defense set their tone early by held Ole Miss minus 1 yard on their first possession and punted after 3 and out ending the first half 3-0.
Second quarter Kewan Lacy rushed for a 73 yard touchdown for a 7-3 Ole Miss lead. Miami responded with a Charmar Brown 4 yard touchdown run to regain back.. After Ole Miss Tied it at 10-10 with Lucas Carneiro 42 yard field goal. Miami reimagined the lead on Carson Beck 52 yard touchdown pass to Keelan Marion. Carnerio added a 58 yard field goal to make it 17-13 halftime .
Coming out of the half time third quarter Ole Miss took the lead with two more Carneiro field goals Miami's offense couldn't get it together throwing an interception nd punting the ball twice. Miami offense was forcing key stops but Penalties effect their defense including a targeting ejection called on cornerback Xavier Lucas.(Miami 17,Ole Miss 13).
Miami reclaimed the lead on Beck 36 yard touchdown pass to freshman Malachi Toney. Ole Miss answered with Trinidad Chambliss' 24 yard touchdown pass to Dea Quan Wright followed by a two point conversion to Caleb Odom making the score 27-24. With minutes left in fourth Carson Beck drove down the field converting on fourth downs to get the Hurricanes in the red zone. On second and goal Carson rushed for a 3 yard game winning touchdown to regain the lead with 18 seconds remaining. On the final play Ole Miss Trinidad Chambliss threw a Hail Mary broken up as time expired.
Carson Beck was Offensive MVP he threw for 268 yards with one touchdown pass and one game winning touchdown run, Jakobe Thomas was Defensive MVP he had five tackles. The Hurricanes will now face the winner between Oregon and Indiana.
