NEW YORK (AP) — Jalen Brunson ignited one of the greatest comebacks in NBA postseason history, scoring 38 points and leading the New York Knicks from a 22-point deficit in the fourth quarter to a thrilling 115-104 overtime victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals.

The Knicks trailed 92-70 with 7:38 remaining in regulation before closing the quarter on a blistering 22-8 run to force overtime. New York then outscored Cleveland 14-3 in the extra period, completing a 44-11 surge over the final 7:40 of game time. It marked the largest fourth-quarter comeback in Conference Finals history in the play-by-play era and the biggest in Knicks playoff lore.

Brunson, who added six assists, was unstoppable in the clutch with multiple threes and driving baskets that electrified Madison Square Garden. Mikal Bridges and other supporting pieces stepped up during the rally as the Knicks defended their home court effectively after sweeping the 76ers in the previous round.

The Cavaliers, playing just days after their grueling Game 7 road win over the Pistons, built a commanding lead behind strong play from Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. They led by as many as 22 but could not close it out, managing just three points in overtime.

Cleveland had controlled much of the game after a slow start, holding leads through the second and third quarters. But the Knicks’ resilience and home crowd energy proved decisive in the dramatic finish.
