TEMPE, Ariz. — Police are searching for a teenage suspect accused of threatening two local residents with a knife early Monday morning in a neighborhood near East Norwood Street, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. near the 100 block of East Norwood, according to a Tempe Police Department report. The victims, identified as Jeffrey Gordon Smith, 18, and William Russell Jones, 17, told officers they were confronted by an unknown male believed to be about 15 years old.

Police said the suspect, described as a white male about 5 feet 8 inches tall and 130 pounds with short, curly brown hair, was wearing blue jeans and a Levi’s jacket and carrying a knife with a blade approximately 4 to 5 inches long.

Smith and Jones had been searching the area for a suspect involved in a burglary from a vehicle reported earlier that night at 210 E. Norwood, according to police. During their search, they encountered the individual near the intersection of Norwood and Grandview streets.

Smith exited the vehicle and questioned the individual about the burglary, police said. Jones also asked the suspect about his whereabouts shortly before the incident. The suspect responded that he had been at a store but became agitated when asked for proof.

According to the report, the suspect then pulled out a knife, held it over his head and threatened the pair, telling them not to “screw with” him. Smith returned to the vehicle, at which point the suspect approached the passenger side and began striking the door with the handle of the knife.

Police said the suspect then reached through the open window and made a stabbing motion toward Smith as Jones drove away. The suspect briefly chased the vehicle but was unable to keep up. Neither victim was injured.

The confrontation followed a reported burglary earlier that night involving Michael J. Johnson, who told police he discovered his vehicle had been broken into at approximately 11:20 p.m. Johnson and Smith initially searched the area but did not locate any suspects.

Officers later investigated a residence at 110 E. Norwood after the suspect allegedly pointed to it during the confrontation. A resident, identified as Gary E. Henderson, 21, denied involvement and said he was unaware of anyone matching the suspect’s description. A police comparison between Henderson and the suspect description was negative.

Investigating officers Richard Cable and Bryan Cook collected latent fingerprints from the vehicle, according to the report. Sgt. Calvin Forbes supervised the investigation.

Police said no arrests have been made. Jones indicated he is willing to assist in prosecution, while Smith was uncertain, according to the report.

The investigation remains ongoing.
